Whether or not you are overweight is best defined by referring to the Body Mass Index, or BMI. This is a statistical measure of the weight of a person scaled according to height, and was invented in the mid 1800s. BMI is defined as a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of their height in metres, so BMI = kg/m². BMI became a popular measure during the mid 1900s when there was a noticeable increase in overweight problems in Western society. BMI enabled a person’s fatness or thinness to be expressed in numeric terms so that health professionals could discuss over- and under-weight problems more objectively with their patients. The following shows how different BMIs are categorised:
- <16.5 Starvation
- 16.5 – 18.5 Underweight
- 18.5 – 25.0 Normal
- 25.0 – 30.0 Overweight
- 30.0 – 35.0 Obese
- 35.0 – 40.0 Clinically obese
- >40.0 Morbidly obese
Being overweight or indeed being underweight can seriously affect a person’s health, causing severe health problems such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, certain types of cancer, gout, and gall bladder disease. Being overweight can also cause problems such as sleep apnoea (interrupted breathing during sleep) and osteoarthritis (wearing away of the joints). The more overweight you are, the more likely you are to have health problems. You can control your BMI and keep it within a safe range by exercising regularly and by ensuring that your diet consists of healthy foods.
