The World Health Organisation has laid down a set of figures to determine whether an individual is either overweight or underweight, and this is called the Body Mass Index, or BMI classification. This is a simple height weight index, which is brought about by dividing the person’s weight in kilograms by the square of their height in metres. For example, an adult weighing 100kgs and having a height of exactly 2 metres would have a BMI of 100/2² or 25.0. The BMI for a normal person is between 18.5 and 25. A person with a BMI of between 25 and 30 is overweight and classified as being pre-obese, and over 30 is obese. If your BMI is less than 18.5 you are considered underweight, and below 16 is considered severely thin. The figures derived from BMI have been tabulated in height:weight ratio tables that can be found in many medical publications and extensively on the Internet. It’s quite normal for people to put on weight when their metabolism slows down, which it does for most people as they grow older. Of course there will always be people that retain a high metabolic rate until late in life – those are the people we look at with envy. Being overweight can lead to a number of weight-related health problems, so it’s important to try to keep your weight within the normal BMI limits.
