In a world of refined sugars and carbohydrate, the harder (yet better) choice to make is towards wholegrain foods.  These foods can reduce your risk of developing high blood pressure (according to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition).  This study was done over an extended period of 18 years, and followed 32 000 subjects.  The results of the study was that those individuals who ate the most whole grains (about 46g per day) were 19% less likely to be diagnosed with hypertension than those who ate least (about 3g per day).

Wholegrain contains potassium and fibre, both important products in the regulation of your blood pressure.  The higher the fibre content of the product, it also makes it lower on the glyceamic index.  Therefore, the food will provide you with more sustainable and help keep your blood pressure more stable.

Choose wholegrain foods as far as possible.  The best way to ensure you do this is to re-stock your cupboards with items that is higher in fibre-content, i.e.:
-Check the cereal box to ensure it is wholegrain
-When buying bread, opt for wholegrain and seedbreads
-Purchase wholegrain pasta and couscous
-Brown rice is a better option than white rice

When you are following the Herbalife weight loss eating plan, you would be replacing two meals with a delicious shake, with your third meal being a healthy, colourful meal.  Often I get asked the question: “What do you mean by a colourful ?”

This groundbreaking advice comes from the writing of Dr Heber, the science and nutrition expert on the panel of experts.  In his book, “What color is your ?” he provides helpful tips on ensuring that you get the best possible nutrition.  (We are off course very proud to have him constantly working on the improvements and advisory development of Herbalife products!)

His advice is: “Colorize your .”  This advice comes from the study of a vast spectrum of fruits and vegetables that are all from different colour groups.  It again emphasizes how important it is to eat a vast spectrum of colourful fruits and vegetables for their promoting properties.

This is not a difficult task, especially in South Africa where we have the most beautiful seasonal fruits and vegetables.  Almost all fruits and vegetables are naturally low in fat, contains high amounts of fibre and contains natural chemicals that can help protect your body from cancer, heart disease, age related eye problems and muscular degeneration.  Apart from the benefits, there is off course the other sensory benefit of all the colours on your plate!

Try to add as many plant based colours into your as possible.  In most cases, the skins are the most colourful and the rich source of protective phytonutrients.  Therefore, avoid peeling fruits like apples, eggplant and peaches.
