Do you stop eating when you’ve had enough?  Or do you treat your body like a trashcan by thinking “I can just as well eat this otherwise I will have to throw it away”.  Well, best you rather throw it into the dustbin than using your body as a dustbin!

People eat for a variety of reasons.  Whether this is out of hunger, boredom, emotional upset, habit, etc, etc.  I think in the original plan, we were only meant to eat to provide for our bodies.  This meant listening to your bodies needs and then satisfying this need and stopping when the need has been met. 

These days we are bombarded with pre-packaged meals, very large restaurant or fast food restaurant servings and with our busy lifestyles, have probably learnt to ignore our bodies and listen to its needs.  Just think about how you can go on and on working even though you know you are tired and need a break?  It is in this same manner that you can also start to tune out the voice of your body’s food needs.

So, to a great extent, it is also about becoming more aware of your body.  This simple exercise will help:
Wherever you are, just take 2 minutes and sit still.  Close your eyes and just start breathing deeply.  Then ask yourself a few questions:
-How am I feeling right now?
-How is my body – am I comfortable? Hot/cold?
-How are my water levels – am I thirsty?
-How is my – am I hungry?  If so, for what am I hungry?

You’d be amazed that you actually know the answers to these questions – you just need to take the time to ask!

Being on a does not mean you can’t have any fun or not eat at a restaurant.  Here is a guide to keep your healthy lifestyle and in place even at your favourite restaurant when making your menu selection:

For starters:
Choose a vegetable based soup (not a creamy soup), or a steamed seafood cocktail (ask them to bring the dressing separately so you can keep control over the amount).  A glass of fruit juice is also a great choice.

Bread and rolls:
If you are going for breakfast, ask for only one slice of wholegrain or rye bread.  If you are at the restaurant for lunch or dinner and the bread basket comes standard, rather ask the waiter to remove the bread.  It will just add extra calories and is not needed.

Alcohol:
Unfortunately, alcohol gives empty calories (i.e. it contains carbohydrates, but it also slows your bodies ability to digest).  Additionally, alcohol may increase appetite and make you less aware of when you are full.
But you can still enjoy alcohol, just limit it to one glass of dry white or red wine, or a tot of whiskey or gin and mix with water or soda water.

Choose low fat:
As far as possible choose the option that has been steamed, baked or grilled.  Boiled, wine sauce, stirfried and poached also present good options.  Avoid fried food.  Or if your food is friend, remove the fried crust and don’t eat it.

Salads:
Don’t be fooled that salads are always low in fat and a good option!  Beware the hidden fats of bacon, cheese and mayonnaise salads.  Rather ask for a fresh green salad with salad dressing on the side.

Main course:
Fish and chicken are lower in fat than red meats.  Also try and select a protein portion size of no more than 170g (If you are selecting a steak, choose the smallest portion, i.e. 150g).  Ask for any sauces that comes with your food to be served separately.

Dessert:
Your best option is a fresh fruit salad or a sorbet.  Alternatively, a nice cup of decaf coffee is also delicious after a meal.

Tips for success:
-Have an apple and a glass of water before going to the restaurant to satisfy the most urgent cravings.
-Take 2 Fibre & Herb tablets and 2 Herbalife Lipobond tablets before going to the restaurant.  These tablets will help trap the fats that you might consume and also give you a sensation of being fuller, thereby preventing you of eating too much.

Dieting has been a lifestyle for lots of people.  Daily I encounter people who tell me that they have tried everything, but can’t keep the weight off.  So to an extent, we have accepted dieting has part of our habits and lifestyle and keep looking out for the next to help reduce and keep off the weight.

It is also fascinating how information about a healthy changes.  Previously we heard that you need to have a lot of carbohydrates, but this trend seems to be changing again.

I don’t know the answers to this all, but there are a few things that I know and that one should keep into account:
-The best is nutritionally balanced and advocated moderate exercise as part of the programme.
-A pill on its own (without a calorie controlled diet and exercise) can’t help you without making significant changes to your metabolism (not necessarily all in a healthy way).
-Anything that promises revolutionary , every month, can’t work.  Or if it does, it might be difficult to keep the weight off after you have lost it.

So why is it that we want to follow the next best thing to keep weight off?  We all probably know that losing weight is not an easy or fast process. It took time to put on the weight, so it will probably also take time to lose it.  If you can sustainably lose weight over time, and by doing so, change your eating and exercise patterns, your chances of keeping the weight of in the long run is improved.
