While breastfeeding it is no time to embark on a low fat, low calorie diet. Your body needs extra calories and fluids during lactation, with the recommended daily allowance of nutrition’s for lactating women including:
- 6-11 servings of bread, cereal, pasta, rice
- 2-4 servings of fruit
- 3-5 servings of vegetables
- 2-3 servings of meat, fish, poultry, eggs
- 2-3 servings of mild or other dairy products
- Up to three liters of water a day
If you aren’t eating in this way, you may want to consider a supplement. Poor diet affects the quality and quantity of your breast milk. Eating a healthy, balanced diet will ensure that your baby gets all the nutrients it needs from your milk. Breast milk is often deficient in vitamin D and iron, and you may need to consider supplementing your intake of these nutrients.
