Sound like a lot of hard work and giving up what you love?  Following a plan does not mean you can’t have a little of what you love to eat, but there are a few rules:

-No big portions.  Not in food or in sweet treats.  For instance, restaurant portions are usually 1.5 to 2.5 times the size of an appropriate healthy portion.  A piece of cake in the coffee shop is roughly 16 times too much.  And that jumbo cappuccino muffin has just snatched all your carbohydrate needs for the day.  Not only do big portions have a lot of , it also takes a long time to move through your digestive system, leaving you feeling sluggish.

-Eat less, do more.  The more you eat, the more activity and exercise you need to burn the energy you get from the food.  By lowering the amounts / portion size and introducing more activity, you can lose weight and lose cm and have more energy.

-Eat breakfast.  Breakfast is essential to keep your blood sugar levels stable, a factor which will help prevent you from overeating.  A great breakfast is a smoothie with added protein, such as a Herbalife which provides you with a full meal in a glass.

-Have good snacks.  Snacks aren’t bad in itself, it just depends on what you are having.  Be prepared with a morning and afternoon snack, such as yoghurt, fruit & peanut butter, a Herbalife protein bar etc to give you an energy lift.

-Be consistent.  Unfortunately binging one day and then fasting the next day does not equally spread the calories on the long term.  Be consistent, make a plan and stick to it.

-Clear the house.  If you keep your favourite food in the house whilst trying to follow your plan, you are setting yourself up for failure with unnecessary temptation.  Have another snack at hand, like a piece of fruit when you crave something sweet.  Or some lean biltong for when you crave something salty.

If you are truly convinced that you are sticking to your , but you are not losing weight or centimetres, you may be suffering from ‘unconscious eating’!  Research shows that the average dieter often ‘forgets’ about up to 400 that they eat per day.  This might slow your weight loss per week with a quarter!

Often we think that we have only 3 meals per day.  What about the small things between meals?  A cup of coffee with full cream milk and two sugars – are you counting this as a meal?  It might not be a full meal, but it does have calories.  The best way to find the hidden 400 calories in your diet is to keep a food diary: recording everything that you eat (this also helps you think twice about what you put in your mouth!).

Here are a few tips:
- Keep a food journal, write down everything that you eat
- Cathy Nonas (author of Outwit your Weight), suggests tying a red ribbon around your wrist.  When you see this ribbon, think twice about what you are putting in your mouth.
- Pre-prepare your lunch daily or have a meal replacement.  This saves on average 300 calories rather than opting for the cafeteria / fast food or convenience foods.
- Know your portions.  A protein portion is the size of your palm, and as think as your hand on the pinkie side when you turn it sideways.  Carbohydrates (i.e. pasta, potato, rice, etc) are the size of your fist and fruit and vegetables should fit into your cupped hands.  This is the correct portion size and allocation per balanced meal.
