Are you concerned about your husband’s weight? At least once a week a concerned wife contacts me about helping her husband to lose weight. Often her concern is coupled with worries about his health, cholesterol and more. This is a real concern for many women as they want to ensure the health and longevity of their family and do what is best for their husbands.
The easy answer to this concern is to get your husband’s buy-in to the process of weight loss. Be careful not to criticise (this will only bring about resistance), but rather share your honest concerns and remind him what you love about him. More than anything respect his decision and be willing to help. Even if you have his buy-in, it makes a world of difference if the wife supports the process by helping to prepare meals and ensuring the house is full of healthy snacks. If you want your husband to lose weight, you will have to help.
Your aim needs to be to improve his metabolism, provide foods that give healthy and long-lasting energy, that is a good source of protein and that is enjoyable. Here are a few things you will need to do:
1. Remove all junk food from the house. Stock the fridge with healthy snacks like fruit sticks and smoothies.
2. Change the whole family’s eating pattern. It definitely won’t work if your hubby has a plate full of steamed vegetables and the rest of you are having fried chicken and chips. Rather all join in and make it a family effort.
3. Cook low fat, low carb food. Be creative with seasoning the foods (start adding fresh herbs, cinnamon, etc) to ensure they are still tasty. Don’t cook in oil.
4. Improve his fitness. It can be very rewarding if you can exercise with him. Sneak in exercise by doing fun things together, like going on a picnic and hike. Sex is also a great calorie burner – it burns about 500 calories, the equivalent of an hours worth of running!
5. Introduce healthier ways of living gradually. This will help to make it a new sustainable lifestyle.
