It is winter time in South Africa, which means wet, cold and snow capped mountains where I live!  It also usually means piling on layers of clothing, hot chocolate and other comfort foods!

This winter I decided that I want to look good and feel great all through winter and right into spring, beating the spring need for weight loss and exercise.  It hasn’t been easy all the time, but I can truly say that I am feeling great, I have lots of , well and have not had to fight a cold or flu this winter.

The greatest contributor to my feeling of wellbeing is my trusted .  My has become one of my favourite foods and I look forward to my 2 meal replacements per day.  They are so easy and convenient and takes only seconds to prepare. Most of us know that a lifestyle is characterised by eating and some moderate exercise.  But do you know of all the benefits that come with this (besides the obvious ones)?

A recent study from the Iowa State University found that people who exercise for about 30 minutes, 5 days a week, may use fewer sick days!  The research found that individuals who exercise regularly and did come down with the flu, was better able to get over it.  They showed fewer symptoms and traces of the virus in their lungs than those individuals not following an active lifestyle.  Remember though to not start exercising / or to exercise when you already have the flu (or showing symptoms such as fever, aches or sore throat).

Find an exercise routine that is exciting and then change it about every 6 weeks. Going to the gym or jogging is not your only option – try bootcamp, a dance class or even your home exercise equipment!

EAT BEFORE OR AFTER EXERCISE? | HERBALIFE SOLUTION

Have you also wondered whether it is best to eat before or after exercise?  Or whether you should have your before or after exercise?

In terms of how food works:  carbohydrates are digested into energy within a short span of time.  Therefore, when you need an energy boost, your body will need carbohydrates.  Eating a small portion of carbohydrates before exercise is useful as it will help your body to perform at its best during exercise.  Examples are a small banana, 50-100ml fruit juice, or a few sips of your , or a small portion of carbohydrate rich energy drink.

When carbohydrates and proteins are combined, you will get a slower, more sustainable release of energy.  This is good when you are having a meal or a snack.  If your meal only consists of carbohydrates, you will have an energy spike, but soon after, also an energy dip where you feel mostly crave more carbohydrates as your body needs energy.  This might have you reaching for fast foods, sugary snacks etc.  Therefore, for every meal and snack, always combine your carbs and proteins.

How would you define ? And building on that question, would you say that you are leading a healthy life?

- What legacy do you want to leave in this world?  Would your age have any effect on this?
- What do you need on a daily basis to feel healthy, and energetic?
- When are you at your absolute best?  What is it that helps you to be there?
- If you had deep respect for your body and its needs, what is the one thing that you would do differently?

It often helps to just refocus and give yourself an honest answer to these questions.  This year I had one of those birthdays which has zero as a second digit.  For some reason, the birthdays tend to be specific marks in your lifespan and a time when you re-evaluate who you are and where you are heading.  It was also at this junction that I seriously considered my health and what I am doing to keep my body healthy.  This has led me to come up with my action plan of being the best person I can be.
