  • Opt for reduced fat versions of high fat items, i.e. dairy products, spreads and dressings
  • If you are watching calories, keep in mind that baked goods that are low fat or fat free often contains the same amount of calories as the full fat version. In many cases, fat is replaced by sugar which chases up the calories. 
  • Limit fatty meats such as steak, fatty ground meat (mince) and sausages.  Rather opt for low fat items such as poultry (including ostrich meat), soy, fish, low-fat dairy products and egg whites which are low in fat.
  • Be creative with flavouring your foods.  Use fresh herbs, lemon juice, onion, garlic, chillies, cinnamon and other spices rather than relying on thick sauces that are high in fat.
  • When eating out, try to make smart choices.  Choose chicken or fish and ask that it be grilled.  Also be strong and say no to the chips/potatoes and rather ask for a double portion of vegetables.
  • Order salad dressing on the side so you can control the amount.

As I was walking around in the shops I just became aware again of how many temptations we need to resist in order to maintain a healthy weight and healthy eating habits!  And off course, these sumptuous foods are so tasty… it is really hard to resist!

I guess it is no surprise that the number of people struggling with diabetes (Type 2) and insulin resistance (pre-diabetes) is rising at an alarming rate.  The combination in decline in healthy eating (eating more refined carbohydrates, too many starches, too little vegetables and fruits) and exercise has caused some serious concerns.

Maybe you want to because you’d like to feel better about yourself and fit into your clothes.  There is nothing wrong with that.  But, it might also be that you have to as your is at risk.  Did you know that if you have insulin resistance (pre-diabetes), if you could only lose 5-7% of your body weight, that you can delay or even prevent the diabetes onset.  The condition can mostly be treated with healthy lifestyle choices pertaining to and moderate exercise.
