In a world of refined sugars and carbohydrate, the harder (yet better) choice to make is towards wholegrain foods.  These foods can reduce your risk of developing high blood pressure (according to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition).  This study was done over an extended period of 18 years, and followed 32 000 subjects.  The results of the study was that those individuals who ate the most whole grains (about 46g per day) were 19% less likely to be diagnosed with <a href="http://www.shapelife.co.za/blog/tag/hypertension/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with hypertension">hypertension</a> than those who ate least (about 3g per day).</p>
<p>Wholegrain contains potassium and fibre, both important products in the regulation of your blood pressure.  The higher the fibre content of the product, it also makes it lower on the glyceamic index.  Therefore, the food will provide you with more sustainable energy and help keep your blood pressure more stable.</p>
<p>Choose wholegrain foods as far as possible.  The best way to ensure you do this is to re-stock your cupboards with items that is higher in fibre-content, i.e.:<br />
-Check the cereal box to ensure it is wholegrain<br />
-When buying bread, opt for wholegrain and seedbreads<br />
-Purchase wholegrain pasta and couscous<br />
-Brown rice is a better option than white rice</p>
