You might be doing everything right – eating a , balanced , 3 meals a day.  You might even be doing your moderate 3-5 times per week.  But still you are not losing weight and can’t understand why!

My question is, what are you having between the meals?  Have you ever calculated this?  My mom once said that it is the food that you don’t ask grace for that makes you fat.  For my young mind this didn’t make sense and I wondered how prayer changed the content of the food!  There is however truth in what she said – it is all those things that you eat that do not form part of your meals that is actually what is causing the problems.  Especially if you have a tendency to eat these after 10pm!

When planning your plan, it is important to calculate in your snacks as part of this.  This includes determining the portion of your snack and also counting it as part of your .

Another important thing about snacks is that you always combine a protein and carbohydrate as a snack.  I.e. an apple (carbohydrate) combined with a teaspoon of peanut butter (protein).  Or a provita (carbohydrate) and a slice of cheese (protein).  A tub of yoghurt provides both.  A Herbalife protein bar is also a great in-between snack.

If you are trying to , you can also use the tablets at tea times as ‘snack’.  This great product has appetite suppressing and mood-lifting qualities and helps you through that midmorning or afternoon time where you want to reach for snacks.

fat loss

How would you like to stay in shape this winter?  You can, by changing the way you think about and approach foods, and with a trusted weight control partner in products.

Sound like a lot of hard work and giving up what you love?  Following a plan does not mean you can’t have a little of what you love to eat, but there are a few rules:

-No big portions.  Not in food or in sweet treats.  For instance, restaurant portions are usually 1.5 to 2.5 times the size of an appropriate healthy portion.  A piece of cake in the coffee shop is roughly 16 times too much.  And that jumbo cappuccino muffin has just snatched all your carbohydrate needs for the day.  Not only do big portions have a lot of , it also takes a long time to move through your digestive system, leaving you feeling sluggish.

-Eat less, do more.  The more you eat, the more activity and exercise you need to burn the energy you get from the food.  By lowering the amounts / portion size and introducing more activity, you can and and have more energy.

-Eat is essential to keep your levels stable, a factor which will help prevent you from .  A great breakfast is a smoothie with added protein, such as a shake which provides you with a full meal in a glass.

-Have good snacks.  Snacks aren’t bad in itself, it just depends on what you are having.  Be prepared with a morning and afternoon , such as yoghurt, fruit & peanut butter, a Herbalife protein bar etc to give you an energy lift.

-Be consistent.  Unfortunately binging one day and then fasting the next day does not equally spread the calories on the long term.  Be consistent, make a plan and stick to it.

-Clear the house.  If you keep your favourite food in the house whilst trying to follow your plan, you are setting yourself up for failure with unnecessary temptation.  Have another snack at hand, like a piece of fruit when you crave something sweet.  Or some lean biltong for when you crave something salty.

healthy food choices
Starving yourself when your body needs fuel is not a good idea.  It is therefore important to know how to choose a good snack that not only satisfies your craving, but also fuels your body in a and nutritionally balanced way.

Tip 1: Look at the Nutritional Label
When you look at the Nutrition Label (the label on the box that sets out the amount of , fat, etc in the food item), look for a snack that is balanced with two or three of the major nutrients (, fats, carbohydrate) with at least a couple of grams of Fibre.   You want to choose a snack that is going to keep up your energy for at least a few hours and therefore it needs to have a balance of , fats and carbohydrates or at least a balance of two of these.  A snack containing about 150-200 is adequate for someone following a 2000 a day diet. Fibre will also keep you feeling fuller, so opt for a snack with at least 4g fibre.  Fat also helps you to stay fuller, so the fat free option is not always the best.  You do however have to watch your total fat intake for the day.

Tip 2: Identify a good snack
So you might ask, what is a good snack then?  A healthy snack can come in many different forms.  You can also tailor your snacks to suit your lifestyle.  On some days, a food snack (i.e. 2 x Provita with a slice of low fat cheese and half an apple) will work and for other days a Protein Bar (i.e. Protein Bars) could be your best option.

Tip 3: Choose wisely for a sweet snack
All else being equal, let’s say you have a craving for a sweet snack.  Your best option would be something that is naturally sweet, i.e. fruit or dried fruit chips.  Apart from the sweet flavour of the fruit, you will also get lots of other nutrient benefits, i.e. vitamins, antioxidants, fibre, etc.

Tip 4: Frequency of snacks
In a healthy diet you can have 2-3 snacks a day.  This helps you to control blood sugar, boost energy and control your weight.  If you go too long without food, it might lead to bingeing and trigger overeating.  Rather plan well and have your snacks prepared for the day.  You can even have an extra a day that you divide into snack portions.

healthy foods
As I was walking around in the shops I just became aware again of how many temptations we need to resist in order to maintain a healthy weight and habits!  And off course, these sumptuous foods are so tasty… it is really hard to resist!

I guess it is no surprise that the number of people struggling with diabetes (Type 2) and insulin resistance (pre-diabetes) is rising at an alarming rate.  The combination in decline in healthy eating (eating more refined carbohydrates, too many starches, too little vegetables and fruits) and exercise has caused some serious health concerns.

Maybe you want to because you’d like to feel better about yourself and fit into your clothes.  There is nothing wrong with that.  But, it might also be that you have to as your health is at risk.  Did you know that if you have insulin resistance (pre-diabetes), if you could only lose 5-7% of your body weight, that you can delay or even prevent the diabetes onset.  The condition can mostly be treated with healthy lifestyle choices pertaining to and .

It is all about the choices you make!

Here are a few ideas of how you can change your diet today:

BREAKFAST:
Example:
Muffin and medium frappucino: 930 calories and 33 gram fat
A Formula 1 Nutritional Shake with 2% milk: 216 calories and 6.4 gram fat
By choosing a Herbalife shake instead of a ‘just a muffin and coffee’ everyday, you save 714 calories and 26.6 grams of fat.  By just making this swap, you could lose about 1kg a week!

LUNCH:
Roast beef sandwich with cheese and mayonnaise: 850 calories, 30g fat
Turkey/ shaved chicken sandwich with vegetables and mustard: 350 calories, 5g fat
You save 500 calories and 25g of fat.  If you were looking to lose weight, you could also have replaced your lunch with a shake, saving you even more calories!

A few other ideas:
-When preparing a meal with beef mince, substitute half of the mince with lentils.  This will bring your meals Glycemic Loading down and reduce the amount of fat.
-Dilute your mayonnaise with fat free plain yoghurt.
-As a snack, have a
-Need the kick you get from a cup of coffee? Substitute with a Thermojetics Herbal Beverage (fondly known as Herbalife tea).  It gives you even more energy and burns fat at the same time.
-Get active, just 30 min of moderate exercise (walking) 5 times a week can make a big difference in your health and weight.
