How would you define healthy living? And building on that question, would you say that you are leading a healthy life?

- What legacy do you want to leave in this world?  Would your age have any effect on this?
- What do you need on a daily basis to feel healthy, and ?
- When are you at your absolute best?  What is it that helps you to be there?
- If you had deep respect for your body and its needs, what is the one thing that you would do differently?

It often helps to just refocus and give yourself an honest answer to these questions.  This year I had one of those birthdays which has zero as a second digit.  For some reason, the birthdays tend to be specific marks in your lifespan and a time when you re-evaluate who you are and where you are heading.  It was also at this junction that I seriously considered my health and what I am doing to keep my body healthy.  This has led me to come up with my action plan of being the best person I can be.

Earlier this week I was watching a programme on television where the presenter was helping an individual to change her eating patterns and lose weight.  As part of the process of creating awareness, the presenter displayed everything the individual had eaten for the last 7 days on a table.  And what a shock it was to the individual!  Firstly off course to see the amount, and secondly to recognise how much snacks and unhealthy food/alcohol (you name it) was to be found on the table.

What would the table look like if I displayed everything you consumed over the last 7 days.  Remember, this includes what you ate and what you had to drink.  If you look at this table – would you say it supports a healthy lifestyle?

When you make the decision to or to lose weight, often one of the hardest things to do is to decide what to change in your diet, how to change it and how to keep up the new habit.  One of the best ways to do this is to start growing in awareness of what and when you eat.  Keep a 7 day record of everything that you consume.  If you want to take it up a notch, even write down why you are consuming it (whether you are hungry, thirsty, just feel like it, social function, etc).  This will help you see where the major pitfalls to a healthier eating plan are for you.

At the end of the seven days, have a look at what you have written. Look at the trends in your eating pattern.  Compare this with that of a plan to see where your needs are.  Most likely it would include increasing fruit and vegetable intake, drink more water or cut back on sweet foods.
