Earlier this week I was watching a programme on television where the presenter was helping an individual to change her eating patterns and lose weight. As part of the process of creating awareness, the presenter displayed everything the individual had eaten for the last 7 days on a table. And what a shock it was to the individual! Firstly off course to see the amount, and secondly to recognise how much snacks and unhealthy food/alcohol (you name it) was to be found on the table.
What would the table look like if I displayed everything you consumed over the last 7 days. Remember, this includes what you ate and what you had to drink. If you look at this table – would you say it supports a healthy lifestyle?
When you make the decision to eat healthier or to lose weight, often one of the hardest things to do is to decide what to change in your diet, how to change it and how to keep up the new habit. One of the best ways to do this is to start growing in awareness of what and when you eat. Keep a 7 day record of everything that you consume. If you want to take it up a notch, even write down why you are consuming it (whether you are hungry, thirsty, just feel like it, social function, etc). This will help you see where the major pitfalls to a healthier eating plan are for you.
At the end of the seven days, have a look at what you have written. Look at the trends in your eating pattern. Compare this with that of a healthy eating plan to see where your needs are. Most likely it would include increasing fruit and vegetable intake, drink more water or cut back on sweet foods.
