It is winter time in South Africa, which means wet, cold and snow capped mountains where I live!  It also usually means piling on layers of clothing, hot chocolate and other comfort foods!

This winter I decided that I want to look good and feel great all through winter and right into spring, beating the spring need for and .  It hasn’t been easy all the time, but I can truly say that I am feeling great, I have lots of , sleep well and have not had to fight a cold or flu this winter.

The greatest contributor to my feeling of wellbeing is my trusted Herbalife products.  My shake has become one of my favourite foods and I look forward to my 2 shake meal replacements per day.  They are so easy and convenient and takes only seconds to prepare. I use Herbalife Nutritional Shake Mix, Personalised Protein Powder, Thermojetics and Herbal Aloe in my shake, mixed with a little milk and topped with water.  For my shake just after / before , I add a small banana to the mix.

WHAT IS NORMAL WEIGHT | NORMAL DIET? | HERBALIFE DIET

Has your life been a constant struggle in getting to that illusive normal weight range?  Arriving at a healthy body weight is not easy.  Knowing what exactly that is for you, might be even harder.  The textbook method to calculate your BMI (Body Mass Index) is your weight in kilos, divided by the square of your height in metres.  A healthy BMI would thus be between 18.5 and 25.  If below 18.5 you would be classified as underweight and over 25, would be overweight.  Over 28-30 would be obese.

This could therefore be construed as the normal weight range.  But there is a vast range difference between a BMI of 19 and 24.5!  This alludes to a clue – your target weight and what is normal weight for you, is highly personal.  Where you are at your healthiest and best is not just a number, but also a general state of wellbeing.  For instance, you could be very lean and feel fantastic, even if your BMI is under 18; and not experience any of the typical symptoms of being underweight.  If you are feeling dizzy or fatigued, even when on , you are not eating enough and your body is undernourished.

Another, equally complicated, measure is to restrict yourself to a certain calorie intake.  The amount of calories you need depend on a number of factors, including your age, activity level and lean body mass.  Allthough a rough weekly calorie intake can serve as a great guideline, following it to the letter could also not be what is best for you.

I think to a large extent many of us have started to follow this ‘presciption’ of what would be normal for our bodies and have unlearnt your body’s voice of when it is doing well and when not.

Sound like a lot of hard work and giving up what you love?  Following a plan does not mean you can’t have a little of what you love to eat, but there are a few rules:

-No big portions.  Not in food or in sweet treats.  For instance, restaurant portions are usually 1.5 to 2.5 times the size of an appropriate healthy portion.  A piece of cake in the coffee shop is roughly 16 times too much.  And that jumbo cappuccino muffin has just snatched all your carbohydrate needs for the day.  Not only do big portions have a lot of calories, it also takes a long time to move through your digestive system, leaving you feeling sluggish.

-Eat less, do more.  The more you eat, the more activity and you need to burn the you get from the food.  By lowering the amounts / portion size and introducing more activity, you can and lose cm and have more .

-Eat breakfast.  Breakfast is essential to keep your blood sugar levels stable, a factor which will help prevent you from overeating.  A great breakfast is a smoothie with added protein, such as a shake which provides you with a full meal in a glass.

-Have good snacks.  Snacks aren’t bad in itself, it just depends on what you are having.  Be prepared with a morning and afternoon snack, such as yoghurt, fruit & peanut butter, a Herbalife protein bar etc to give you an lift.

-Be consistent.  Unfortunately binging one day and then fasting the next day does not equally spread the calories on the long term.  Be consistent, make a plan and stick to it.

-Clear the house.  If you keep your favourite food in the house whilst trying to follow your plan, you are setting yourself up for failure with unnecessary temptation.  Have another snack at hand, like a piece of fruit when you crave something sweet.  Or some lean biltong for when you crave something salty.

PINEAPPLE ORANGE COCONUT SHAKE | HERBALIFE SHAKE RECIPE

This shake recipe will taste like a tropical holiday in your mouth and wake you upt o feeling more healthy and energetic!

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons of Herbalife Nutritional Shake Mix (Vanilla flavour)
1-2 tablespoons of Personalised protein powder
250ml low-fat milk / soy milk (chilled)
1 cup frozen pineapple chunks
2ml coconut extract
3ml orange extract
4 ice cubes
