eating outRecently I read an interesting statement in a leading health magazine.  According to research, ladies who stay with their boyfriend or share a place with a friend tend to gain more weight than those who are living on their own.  And then in the next issue of this magazine, there is a whole article about our friends making us fat and that we are 82% more likely to drink heavily if our colleagues do.

Eating and drinking has from the beginning of time been a social activity, as much as it is necessary for energy and sustenance.  We practice this for enjoyment, going out for dinners, etc.  But for some reason, when we try to lose weight and go on a diet, we do it alone.  This makes it even more difficult and explains why you might be prone to if you enjoy your meals with other people at home, or when going out.  They might be having a gloriously buttery and creamy chicken, whilst you are scrunching away on your grilled chicken salad.

In an ideal world, we would all be eating healthily and the person that is on diet and trying to lose weight, won’t stand out when you look at his/her eating habits – it would just be normal.  But currently, there is this vast difference between what can be construed as ‘normal’ food and healthy eating.

That is why support is so important when trying to lose weight.  In that ideal world, I am sure the person will not have much of a problem to lose weight, because a lot of the temptations would be gone and there would be support and motivation and looking at the others’ healthy diet.

If you are truly convinced that you are sticking to your diet, but you are not losing weight or centimetres, you may be suffering from ‘unconscious eating’!  Research shows that the average dieter often ‘forgets’ about up to 400 calories that they eat per day.  This might slow your weight loss per week with a quarter!

Often we think that we have only 3 meals per day.  What about the small things between meals?  A cup of coffee with full cream milk and two sugars – are you counting this as a meal?  It might not be a full meal, but it does have calories.  The best way to find the hidden 400 calories in your diet is to keep a food diary: recording everything that you eat (this also helps you think twice about what you put in your mouth!).

Here are a few tips:
- Keep a food journal, write down everything that you eat
- Cathy Nonas (author of Outwit your Weight), suggests tying a red ribbon around your wrist.  When you see this ribbon, think twice about what you are putting in your mouth.
- Pre-prepare your lunch daily or have a meal replacement.  This saves on average 300 calories rather than opting for the cafeteria / fast food or convenience foods.
- Know your portions.  A protein portion is the size of your palm, and as think as your hand on the pinkie side when you turn it sideways.  Carbohydrates (i.e. pasta, potato, rice, etc) are the size of your fist and fruit and vegetables should fit into your cupped hands.  This is the correct portion size and allocation per balanced meal.
