HERBAL SUPPLEMENTS
- the whole food solution
Herbs have long been known to have both culinary
and medicinal uses and are invaluable used in
food and teas to treat common ailments, and in
the last decade or so pharmaceutical companies
have realised that there is a huge potential for
herbal supplements derived from unusual plants
found in the Amazon rain-forests and other remote
regions, and these are a particularly popular
subject for research.
At Shapelife, their herbal products have been
developed by scientists, doctors and nutritionists
and they too have realised the importance of herbal
supplements, and the energising herb, Guarana,
which enhances performance and gives you an invigorating
lift during the day is just one of the many herbs
they use, as it too, is a herb which was prized
by the Amazonian Indians.
In Southern Africa alone, there are more than
30 000 species of higher plants and of these,
about 3 000 are used as medicines and herbal supplements
to prevent as well as cure health conditions.
Many of these supplements are available as single
herbs or in combinations, as powders, tablets
or liquid extracts, or even raw, to be used in
teas. Some of these are garlic and ginkgo biloba.
Garlic:
A centuries old remedy that treats a variety of
ailments, and has anti-oxidant properties. The
active ingredient in garlic is alliin which reduces
blood pressure and cholesterol levels, thereby
reducing the chance of developing blood clots.
Ginkgo biloba:
There is a great deal of pharmacological and clinical
evidence to support its effectiveness in improving
the peripheral blood supply to the brain and limbs.
It is also used to treat age-related memory loss
and peripheral vascular disease
Since ancient times, herbal knowledge has been
gathered through trial and error. In many countries,
primary health care is still mainly herbal and
is practiced by healers who are not formally training
but who use the extensive knowledge and experience
passed on from their ancestors. Shapelife use
this knowledge and more and incorporate herbs
into all their herbal supplements.
